In this tutorial we will search for works and save the results as a workset. A workset is set of documents that the user is interested in. We will explore results in a Table, as a Timeline over circulation period, and as a Pie chart
Select the Define Workset toolset and click continue button.
Select various search options in the Search Works tool on the left. You will be able to further examine the search results in the Work Selection tool on the right. Note that search criteria on different tabs are cumulative, and if you change a search criterion on one tab, criteria defined on other tabs are still in force.

The lemma search has a few options. You can search by lemma using a specific part of speech tag, or by using a wildcard. For instance, if you are interested in the appearance of the lemma "love," as a noun, you can search for "love (n)". If you'd like to see other related parts of speech, you can use a wildcard. The search "love (n*)" will return any part of speech tag starting with n (for example, np, proper nouns). The lemma headword search will find the lemma, but with any part of speech. Searching for "love" without a qualifying part of speech tag would be equivalent to searching for "love (*)". You can also use the "|" character as an "or" statement. Searching "king (n) | queen (n)" will find all documents where either king or queen appears as a noun.
The spelling search is very similar to the lemma search, except that it does not allow you to stipulate part of speech in the search string (though if you've already selected something on the part of speech tab, it will "and" that search parameter to what you enter in the spelling search). As with the lemma search, you can use "*" and "|" characters in a spelling search. The spelling pattern search will match words to the exact pattern you submit. The standardized spelling search will match words that may have a number of non-standard spellings.

The part of speech function enables you to include linguistic features in your search query. You can select from one of three major categories: Part(s) of Speech, Word Class(es), and Major Word Class(es). These should be considered as search criteria in ascending order of generality: Parts of Speech are more specific than Word Classes, and Word Classes are more specific than Major Word Classes. For example, Major Word Classes condenses nouns, proper nouns, and all other kinds of nouns down to the simple category of nouns. You should choose to stipulate search criteria in only one of these three windows--logically, at the most specific level that suits your purpose.
The syntax, tense, mood and case tab further refines linguistic search. This page allows you to search for works with words matching criteria in each of these categories.
The search results are displayed in the the table view. The table view allows sorting and grouping of works. In the image below the works are grouped by Circulation Period. You can select different grouping options from the Group by... drop down menu.
The Result Summary link provides a text box with a quick summary of the results.
Click the checkbox to display the table of content for the work. You
can select works by clicking the check boxes at the beginning of the
title. You can click on the expand button
to expand a work and select its individual parts. However, if you have selected the work at the title level, all work parts are included in the selection and do not need to be selected individually.
Click the minimize button
to
minimize the group and it displays the total numbers for each entry in
the group.
You can also view results in a Timeline or a Pie Chart. The Timeline Tool places the results along a time line. You can get details about a particular work on the timeline by clicking on it. The pie chart shows displays the distribution according to the circulation period.
The Timeline has three bands: the bottom band displays the distribution of the works in the century, the middle band displays the distribution of works by decade and the top band displays the year the work was published with the title and author information. These bands can be dragged left and right; as you drag one band the other bands move with it.
At any point after you have selected works, you can save those works as a Workset. Worksets can be used for later comparison with other works or worksets, or to search for similar works.
Click the Save button and select whether you are saving a new workset or adding to an existing workset.
The saved workset will be available for use along with other works. You will be able to manage worksets from the initial Project window in the main Workbench.
Select the Add to an Existing workset option to append to an existing workset, if you have already created a workset. There are three Save options: the first option, Overwrite, overwrites the test work list in the workset. The option Overwrite Training overwrites the training works, and the Append option appends the works to the test work list.
To view the text of the works press continue link at the bottom right corner. The Advanced Viewer opens up displaying the first work in the list. You can click on any work to view its full content.
You can also expand or collapse the Bibliographic Info. and Table of Content of the work on the Advanced Viewer for easier navigation.
The advanced viewer has tabs to display bibliographic information and a table of contents for the work. It also has a concordance search function, available under the "options" pane. The concordance search function allows you to form three different types of queries. You can search by part of speech, by lemma or by spelling. For example, to search for all nouns in a work you would form the query "* (n)". The lemma search works in the same way as the selection pane. For example, to search for the lemma love as a noun, form the query "love (n)." Spelling is simplest; just type the word you're looking for.
The concordance search also accepts the "*" and "|" operators used throughout MONK. You may not combine different types of searches. For example, searching spelling and lemma in one query (ex "king (n*) | life") will not work. If you use multiple terms in a query, the concordance search will assume "or" statements between them.
The advanced viewer also has a TEI header tab available under options. This gives a variety of contextual information about the document, including its provenance.
